DSL Refresher training for the Designated Safeguarding Lead and deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (statutory course)

Course Overview
The course covers the requirements of the statutory DFE guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ and examines Local Children Safeguarding Partnership procedures and other key statutory guidance including ‘Working Together to Safeguarding Children’.

Why Attend?

These annual opportunities will help you to ensure you meet statutory training requirements and stay abreast of changes locally and nationally.

The DFE state:
‘The designated safeguarding lead and any deputies should undergo training to provide them with the knowledge and skills required to carry out the role. The training should be updated every two years.

In addition to their formal training, as set out above, their knowledge and skills should be updated, (for example via e-bulletins, meeting other designated safeguarding leads, or taking time to read and digest safeguarding developments), at regular intervals, but at least annually, to keep up with any developments relevant to their role.’

What will it cover?

  • Updates to key statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’
  • Key statutory guidance including ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children’
  • Local Safeguarding Children Partnership procedures including escalation procedures
  • Principles of working in partnership with other agencies
  • Understanding and applying Local Safeguarding Children Partnership ‘threshold document / levels of need guidance’
  • Taking appropriate action when children need protection or a statutory ‘child in need’ assessment or an early help assessment
  • How to make a robust referral to children’s services
  • How to contribute effectively to child protection, child in need or early help assessments and review meetings
  • Key learning from serious case reviews
  • Learning in respect of key safeguarding issues
     

Who should attend?
Any senior member of staff who is the nominated Designated Safeguarding Lead and any member of staff who is nominated to deputise or provide cover for the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead and is part of the safeguarding team.

Any Supplementary Info
Schools from outside of Liverpool should bring a copy of their Local Safeguarding Children Partnership ‘threshold document’, sometimes referred to as ‘levels of needs guidance’.
 

Cost
Two free places annually to all Liverpool schools who receive the Universal Offer and to other schools that have purchased a Safeguarding Service Level Agreement. Additional places can be purchased at £100 each if a school is part of the Universal Offer or has a Safeguarding SLA.

This course is not available to schools who do not receive the universal offer or that do not purchase a Safeguarding SLA.
