Curriculum & Assessment Partner and SAPERE Trainer, Julie McCann, shares how Philosophy for Children (P4C) develops curious, compassionate, and confident learners who can think for themselves and how it perfectly aligns with the upcoming national curriculum reforms.

"In today’s fast-paced, information-rich world, helping children and young people learn how to think—not just what to think—is more important than ever.

Rooted in dialogue, curiosity, and critical thinking, P4C empowers learners to explore big ideas, ask meaningful questions, and engage respectfully with diverse perspectives.

The newly announced national curriculum reforms place renewed emphasis on equipping young people with these exact skills—particularly through an enhanced Citizenship offer and a stronger focus on oracy.

These are essential competencies for navigating their future with confidence and compassion.

Through SAPERE Level 1 Foundation Training, educators are introduced to what it means to be part of a Community of Philosophical Enquiry.

They learn how to facilitate thoughtful dialogue, plan engaging enquiries, and apply philosophical thinking to their own context.

At whatever stage, P4C offers a flexible and inclusive approach that nurtures communicating, listening, reasoning, and reflection – making it a powerful tool that has the ability to transform classroom culture.

P4C isn’t about having the right answers - it’s about learning how to think deeply, listen actively, and speak thoughtfully.

Children become more confident in expressing their ideas, are more open to other viewpoints, and are more skilled in navigating complex issues – developing learners who are curious, compassionate, and confident who can think for themselves.”

The next SAPERE Philosophy for Children (P4C) Foundation Level 1 Training starts in February 2026, and no prior experience of P4C or philosophy is required.
