Ensuring every pupil becomes a confident, fluent reader remains one of the most important and challenging priorities for schools. SIL is addressing this head-on with the introduction of the SIL Reading Development Course (RDC)

“A highly structured, evidence-informed intervention designed to accelerate progress for struggling readers.”

The programme targets pupils who are not yet reading at age-related expectations - whether that’s in years 5 and 6 or across KS3.

By targeting the core barriers to reading success and delivering structured, high-quality instruction, RDC enables schools to:

  • Close reading gaps quickly
  • Build confidence in reluctant readers
  • Strengthen whole-school literacy culture

A Rapid, Structured Approach

This summer, SIL is inviting school leaders to see firsthand how the RDC is already transforming reading outcomes in both primary and secondary settings.

At its core, the RDC focuses on the essential components of reading development:

  • Accuracy and automaticity in word reading
  • Fluency and prosody (expression and pacing)
  • Vocabulary acquisition and application
  • Deep comprehension skills

Through clarity and consistency, pupils can focus on mastering reading skills without unnecessary distractions - resulting in measurable gains in a short period of time.

Proven Impact

Early trial data and pilot school feedback demonstrate the RDC’s effectiveness as a fast-acting intervention.

One primary trial reported an average reading age gain of 12.6 months in less than 20 hours.

Teachers also highlight the programme’s transformational effect on both skills and confidence:

“There is no doubt that the programme has improved the word-reading accuracy and automaticity of every single child… the ‘echo’ reading technique… deepened the children’s reading comprehension.”

Secondary schools have seen equally strong results:

“Implementation… has led to clear improvements in reading fluency… learners engage more deeply with the wider curriculum… enabling most pupils to achieve age-related reading ability in a relatively short space of time.”

Assistant Headteacher, Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School
“We have seen immense improvement in phonics, vocabulary development and confidence in reading… a great inclusion into our Y7 curriculum.”
Subject Leader of English, St John Bosco Arts College

These outcomes highlight RDC’s ability not only to improve reading outcomes but also to unlock access to the wider curriculum.

A high-impact, low-cost intervention

  1. Efficiency and Scalability
The programme can be delivered in both small groups and whole-class settings, making it adaptable to different timetables, staffing models, and student needs.

  2. Rapid Results
With progress seen in as little as 30 sessions, RDC offers a practical solution for schools needing quick, measurable improvements.

  3. Inclusive by Design
RDC is suitable for Mainstream settings, Special Schools,  Alternative Provision (AP) and for those pupils with persistent literacy gaps.

Its structured approach supports learners who may have previously struggled with inconsistent or fragmented interventions.

  4. Alignment with Inspection Priorities
The programme aligns with Ofsted’s emphasis on secure foundational reading skills, particularly accurate and fluent decoding as the gateway to comprehension

Free RDC Launch Events

SIL is hosting free launch events to introduce the programme and share pilot outcomes.

The RDC is relevant to mainstream primaries and AP provisions.

Both sessions will cover:

  • How the RDC works in practice
  • Evidence from trials and pilot schools
  • Implementation guidance for maximum impact
  • What schools receive as part of the programme

They are ideal for Headteachers, English Leads, Reading Leads, Literacy Leads, PP leads, and SENDCos looking to strengthen literacy provision across their school.
