Design Technology: The Design Process
Having a Design and Technology (DT) process in primary education is important as it helps children learn how to think creatively, solve problems, and work systematically.
This process, typically including research, planning, designing, making, and evaluating, helps children to tackle real-world problems with imaginative solutions, think critically about how things work and how they can be improved and develop resilience when things don’t go as planned.
Design Technology: Evaluating the Design Process
Evaluating throughout the Design and Technology (DT) process in schools is essential as it ensures that learners not only create effective solutions but also develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and reflective skills.
Formative evaluation allows learners to assess their progress at each stage - research, design, development, and testing.
They can identify what’s working and what needs to change, leading to better final outcomes.
They learn to reflect on their decisions, materials, and methods. Regular evaluation helps learners to stay aligned with the needs of the user or client and ensures the product remains functional, accessible, and fit for purpose.
Things to consider
- Recordings last between 10 and 30 minutes and include short breaks for tasks or reflection.
- To maximise the learning experience, we recommend delivering each recording as part of a one-hour CPD session, or a staff meeting.
- All recordings will remain available until 31 August 2026 and can be revisited as often as you wish.
- All sessions can also be delivered face to face or combined to provide a half /full day training opportunity for staff in your school, Network, Trust or LA. Get in touch if you would like to explore options.
