Our pre-recorded training offers the same expert-led, high-quality training you’d expect from SIL, but with added flexibility.
Each recording offers whole-staff access, so it’s perfect for supporting staff meetings, staff development, or providing additional flexible CPD options.
Maths: Using Cuisenaire Rods to Support Mathematical Thinking
- This recording offers a powerful, hands-on approach that helps children visualise concepts, understand key relationships like part-whole and proportion, and move confidently through the CPA (Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract) model.
- It highlights how rods can deepen mathematical understanding and unlock rich, conceptual learning
- It provides adaptable, practical examples for all age ranges, showing how Cuisenaire rods can be used to strengthen reasoning, fluency, and problem-solving.
- Ideal for maths leaders looking to enhance teaching strategies and embed meaningful, visual maths across their school.
Maths: Using Apparatus to Support Conceptual Understanding
- Structured apparatus such as Cuisenaire rods, Numicon, base ten, bead strings, and other manipulatives - all play a vital role in supporting mathematical thinking in lessons.
- This recording explores how structured apparatus can be used effectively to support children in visualising mathematical concepts and secure an understanding of number.
Maths: Spoken Language & Vocabulary
- Maths language plays a critical role in learners' overall mathematical development.
Maths: Adapting Planning
- Adapting your maths planning scheme to the needs of your class is important because it ensures that teaching is effective, inclusive, and responsive.
- Every class has a mix of abilities, learning styles, and prior knowledge. Adapting the scheme allows you to scaffold for students who need extra support and challenge higher-achieving learners.
- This recording considers adapting the Maths schemes that you teach from to suit your learners and unpicks a unit of work, giving examples of adaptations.
Maths: Developing Mental Strategies
- Developing mental strategies in maths is crucial because it empowers learners to think flexibly, solve problems efficiently, and build deep understanding.
- This recording helps participants understand the place of mental strategies and why children need to be fluent and confident to use them.
- It also explores a range of mental strategies to aid calculation.
Maths: The Importance of Counting
- Counting accurately and consistently is key to becoming a confident, efficient mathematician.
- This recording will support integration into daily routines and activities, such as transitions, Storytime, or even PE - making it a natural part of the classroom experience.
- It will support you to help learners develop a secure understanding of our number system - essential for deepening understanding of more complex concepts, including calculating with the four operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- By practising counting every day, learners improve their ability to understand quantity, sequence, and comparison, which are vital for future success in maths.
Maths: Basic Skills
- We need basic skills in maths as they form the foundation for understanding more complex concepts and for functioning confidently in everyday life.
- The research carried out by the EEF and the recommendations from the mathematics review, place considerable importance on fluent recall of skills.
- This recording will give you examples of basic skills activities to include in your lessons.
Developing Problem-Solving Skills
- Developing problem-solving skills in maths is essential because it transforms students from passive learners into active thinkers who can apply their knowledge in meaningful ways.
- This recording explores the importance of developing problem-solving skills and shares strategies to create an investigative climate in the classroom.
It provides:
- Opportunities to reflect on the importance of developing problem-solving skills
- Strategies and activities to support problem-solving
- A consistent whole school approach to developing problem-solving
Things to consider
- Recordings last between 10 and 30 minutes and include short breaks for tasks or reflection.
- To maximise the learning experience, we recommend delivering each recording as part of a one-hour CPD session, or a staff meeting.
- All recordings will remain available until 31 August 2026 and can be revisited as often as you wish.
- All sessions can also be delivered face to face or combined to provide a half /full day training opportunity for staff in your school, Network, Trust or LA. Get in touch if you would like to explore options.
