Geography: Studying a Place
Develop key ideas in studying places in the geography curriculum.
- Gain knowledge of key questions to ask when studying a place and examples of how to apply this consistently across the school.
- Learning about different places helps children: recognise the diversity of landscapes, climates, and ecosystems and understand how physical geography (like mountains, rivers, and climate) affects human life.
- It helps build connections between places and shows how they are interconnected through Trade, migration, tourism, and communication.
Geography: Locational Knowledge
Develop a progressive approach to locational knowledge and use retrieval techniques to enhance remembering the content.
- Locational knowledge in geography progresses from focusing on the immediate surroundings to understanding the wider world.
- This progression involves learning about local areas, then expanding to the UK, Europe, and other continents, including physical and human features, and finally developing an understanding of globally significant locations and regions.
- Promote a whole school approach to having a good grasp of locations around the world.
Geography: Mapping Skills
Develop a progressive approach to map skills and review key examples of how to put this into practice.
- Map skills are essential in geography as they help learners understand and interpret the world around them, building spatial awareness and supporting geographical understanding.
- Progress from basic directional understanding and symbol recognition to more complex tasks like using grid references, understanding scale, and interpreting thematic maps.
Things to consider
- Recordings last between 10 and 30 minutes and include short breaks for tasks or reflection.
- To maximise the learning experience, we recommend delivering each recording as part of a one-hour CPD session, or a staff meeting.
- All recordings will remain available until 31 August 2026 and can be revisited as often as you wish.
- All sessions can also be delivered face to face or combined to provide a half /full day training opportunity for staff in your school, Network, Trust or LA. Get in touch if you would like to explore options.
