Planning and Constructing Effective Timetables: A Hands On Course

Course Overview
A well-constructed school timetable is integral to the successful delivery of a school’s curriculum and its students’ success. In this course we will explore
• What makes a well-planned and efficient timetable
• Ensuring your timetable is affordable
• Optimising available resources
• Deploying teachers efficiently and effectively.
• Techniques for constructing and scheduling the timetable.
This course will take you through the whole timetabling process from designing the curriculum, costing the model, deploying resources, scheduling the classes (including discussing strategies to solve problems when they occur) to deploying the school timetable. You will learn from experienced timetablers who will support you in your journey. By the end of the course you should be confident and skilled enough to apply the techniques covered in your own school.

Why Attend?
Bad timetables wreak havoc and impact badly on staff and students. They lead to low morale, increased staff absence and deteriorating behaviour and attainment. Creating a good timetable requires knowledge and understanding of the whole school, its values, its curriculum and its workforce alongside understanding the theory behind timetabling.

What will it cover?
By the end of the two days you will be able to:
• Create, modify and cost a curriculum plan
• Understand different possible curriculum structures
• Run feasibility checks on the structure before scheduling
• Understand and use Combing charts and Conflict Matrices to solve problems
• Deploy resources including teachers, rooms and facilities to classes
• Deal with part-time staff
• Schedule blocks and classes both manually and automatically
• Generate a range of reports
• Edit and print the evolving timetable

Any supplementary info
This course is not software specific and covers the theory of how to timetable. We will however be using the timetabling package Untis throughout the course to demonstrate the advantages of using software to speed up and manage the process. All delegates will be supplied with a full copy of the software so that you can work through the exercises on your own data and so get a good start on your timetable. A third day may be available subject to demand to support the construction of your own timetable.

Who should attend?
• Colleagues new to, or aspiring to, timetabling
• Existing timetablers who could benefit from understanding the timetabling process at a deeper level
Delegates must attend both days
