Course Overview
Spelling Matters is a structured, evidence-informed intervention designed to improve spelling accuracy and fluency in pupils from Year 2 to Year 6, supporting stronger writing outcomes across the curriculum. Rooted in Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) guidance and fully aligned with the DfE Writing Framework, the programme recognises spelling as a critical component of transcription that underpins pupils’ ability to write with fluency and confidence.
The intervention combines diagnostic assessment, targeted teaching and systematic practice, ensuring that support is precisely matched to pupils’ needs. Using a robust approach informed by spelling error analysis research, teachers and teaching assistants will learn how to identify patterns of error and respond with focused, high-impact teaching sequences and strategies.
Spelling Matters has been successfully piloted as part of an early-stage EEF programme development and is designed to build on from any validated systematic synthetic phonics programme, building on pupils’ phonic knowledge while extending their understanding of orthography and morphology. All materials are included, enabling schools to implement the intervention immediately and with consistency.
All resources are included in the price:
- Diagnostic assessment tools
- 58 teaching sequences
- 12 supporting videos
