At St Vincent’s School, we understand the unique challenges faced by individuals with visual and hearing impairments, and we are committed to providing a tailored educational experience that meets the diverse needs of our children and young people. Our dedicated team of highly skilled Qualified Teachers of the Visually Impaired (QTVIs), support staff, and specialist staff work collaboratively to deliver an ambitious and comprehensive curriculum that is both accessible and challenging – this includes both access to the National Curriculum and all areas of the Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment (CFVI).

About the Role

Purpose of the Role
As a valued member of the school’s teaching team, the post holder will demonstrate professional excellence, uphold the school’s aims and ethos, and promote a culture of respect, inclusion, and high expectations.

The Teacher of RE and General Subjects will lead the delivery of creative, engaging, and accessible lessons across RE and a range of general subjects, supporting the holistic development of pupils with a Visual and/or Hearing Impairment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Teaching and Learning
• Deliver high-quality, inclusive teaching to primary-aged pupils with sensory impairments in a specialist school setting
• Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality RE lessons that inspire creativity and meet the individual learning needs of pupils.
• Teach additional subjects as required by the curriculum.
• Establish a positive, inclusive, and stimulating classroom environment that promotes emotional wellbeing, independence, and engagement.
• Differentiate lessons and use adaptive strategies to meet the needs of pupils, including those with visual impairments and other SEND profiles.
• Collaborate closely with teaching assistants, therapists, and parents to ensure a consistent and holistic approach to learning and development.
• Assess, record, and report on pupil progress in accordance with school policies and statutory requirements.
• Contribute to enrichment activities, creative projects, and the wider life of the school community.
• Deliver teaching primarily to pupils within Key Stage 3 to Post-16 provision.
• Maintain high standards of safeguarding, welfare, and health and safety for all pupils

2. Curriculum and Subject Leadership
• Lead and develop the RE curriculum, ensuring it reflects current best practice and the diverse needs of learners.
• Undertake an annual curriculum audit and oversee accreditation processes related to RE and General Subjects.
• Submit curriculum evaluations and development plans to the Assistant Headteacher for inclusion in the School Improvement Plan.
• Promote curriculum innovation and cross-curricular collaboration to enhance learning opportunities.

3. Professional Responsibilities
• Work under the direction of the Headteacher to maintain a balanced and sustainable workload.
• Fulfil all professional duties in relation to planning, teaching, marking, assessment, and pupil progress.
• Promote the personal, social, and emotional development of all pupils.
• Meet agreed deadlines, monitor progress, and work toward identified targets in line with school priorities.
• Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and effective communication with colleagues and parents.
• Engage and direct non-teaching colleagues in the implementation of learning programmes.
• Participate actively in meetings, professional learning, and whole-school initiatives.
• Undertake any other reasonable duties requested by the Headteacher or Senior Leadership Team.

4. General Requirements
• Uphold the school’s values, safeguarding responsibilities, and policies at all times.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive information.
• Contribute positively to the development of the school community and the wellbeing of colleagues and pupils.

Other Duties and Conditions
This job description may be reviewed periodically and amended as required to meet the evolving needs of the school and its pupils, following consultation with the post holder. Where agreement cannot be reached, the employer reserves the right to make reasonable changes to ensure operational and educational priorities are met.
