Primary MFL Subject Leader Briefings 2026/27

Online training sessions are provided via Microsoft Teams. Delegates should use their SIL Account Email Address to login to the Microsoft Teams session.

Live online briefings for Primary MFL Subject Leaders, providing an opportunity to keep informed on any local or national updates and to further develop their role.

A pre-recorded version of the briefing will be available after the session to support reflection, discussion, and school improvement planning. Recordings can be accessed via the My Account Area.

  1. Autumn Term 2026: The Pillars of Progression in Primary MFL: Vocabulary
    This session is the first of three on the pillars of progression in language teaching. It focuses on effective strategies for teaching and embedding vocabulary so that pupils can retain, recall, and actively use new language with confidence.
     
  2. Spring Term 2027 |The Pillars of Progression in Primary MFL: Phonics
    This session is the second of three on the pillars of progression in language teaching. It focuses on helping pupils develop accurate pronunciation, intonation and decoding skills so they can read, speak and understand the target language with confidence.
     
  3. Summer Term 2027 | The Pillars of Progression in Primary MFL: Grammar
    This session is the third of three on the pillars of progression in language teaching. It focuses on grammar in primary MFL and how it can be taught in a clear, meaningful and age-appropriate way.

Cost: £55 per person

This briefing is available either PAYG or as part of the 2026/27 Leadership Briefing package. Purchasing this package entitles schools and settings to one place per briefing.

All costs are subject to VAT. Failure to cancel a non-attendance will incur costs.

Autumn Term 2026 | The Pillars of Progression in Primary MFL: Vocabulary
This session is the first of three on the pillars of progression in language teaching. 

It focuses on effective strategies for teaching and embedding vocabulary so that pupils can retain, recall, and actively use new language with confidence.

Spring Term 2027 |The Pillars of Progression in Primary MFL: Phonics
This session is the second of three on the pillars of progression in language teaching.

It is designed to support primary teachers in delivering effective phonics teaching within Modern Foreign Languages. It focuses on helping pupils develop accurate pronunciation, intonation and decoding skills so they can read, speak and understand the target language with confidence.

Why Attend?
This course will provide clear, structured approaches to teaching phonics in a way that is accessible, systematic and enjoyable for young learners

What will it cover?

  • The importance of phonics in primary MFL and how secure sound–spelling knowledge supports speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. 
  • How to introduce and teach phoneme–grapheme correspondences clearly and progressively through the RRP methodology 
  • Use of songs, rhymes and activities to reinforce phonics knowledge in an engaging and memorable way 
  • Progression of phonics skills across KS2 to support long-term learning

Summer Term 2027 | The Pillars of Progression in Primary MFL: Grammar
This session is the third of three on the pillars of progression in language teaching. It focuses on grammar in primary MFL and how it can be taught in a clear, meaningful and age-appropriate way.

Why Attend?
This session will provide tried and tested strategies to integrate grammar naturally into language lessons, promoting pupils' deeper understanding and improved communication skills.

What will it cover?

  • The key principles of effective grammar teaching in primary MFL
  • Which grammar aspects to teach 
     
  • Embedding grammar into lessons
  • Practical, adaptable classroom activities using all four skills

Cost

£55 + VAT per delegate. unless otherwise stated
